Treatment against ticks and a tapeworm

  • Before
Before pets can enter or re-enter the UK under the scheme, they will have to be treated against the fox tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) and ticks to prevent a risk of potentially serious zoonotic disease coming into the UK. This treatment will have to be carried out every time a pet enters the UK.
  • Time Period
The treatment must be carried out not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours before embarkation to the UK. If an animal is being taken out of the UK on a day trip, it will need to be treated in the UK in the 24 to 48 hour period before the return journey starts.
  • Treatment
The animal must be treated against Echinococcus multilocularis using praziquantel at the dose specified, and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, and against ticks, using an acaricide marketed for that purpose with the approval of the competent authority of the country in which the drug is administered. This treatment can be carried out by any qualified veterinary surgeon in any one of the qualifying countries.
  • Frequency of treatment
Vets should follow the manufacturers’ recommendations as regards the frequency of use of these treatments.
