Arranging the blood test

  • Blood Test
Blood sampling and submission for testing at a recognised laboratory must be carried out by a Vet.
  • Vaccine
UK vaccine manufacturers have advised that the best time for a blood sample to be taken for a blood test is about 30 days after the last vaccine injection. It may be possible for blood samples to be stored by laboratories for later testing.
  • Form
Before sampling and sending, vets should contact the laboratory to obtain the appropriate sample submission form
  • Where the blood test is carried out
The blood test must be performed at a laboratory recognised by MAFF.
  • Vets
Vets should contact VLA about blood testing, Please ring the VLA Rabies Testing Helpline on 01932 357345
  • Laboratory
Blood tests performed by laboratories, including the VLA, before they were recognised by MAFF will not be acceptable.
  • Failure of blood test
If a pet fails the blood test, it will have to be vaccinated and blood tested again. UK vaccine manufacturers have advised that a proportion of vaccinated animals may not show the 0.5 IU antibody titre on blood testing required by the Pet Travel
  • Further blood tests
For the pilot scheme, a blood test is only required after the first vaccination (if successful) provided the pet has been re-vaccinated (booster vaccinated) at the intervals specified by the vaccine manufacturer.
