Your Scotty will want to run around and investigate everything
and everywhere. Training is a most important part of caring for your dog. An
untrained dog could get itself killed running across a busy road in pursuit of a
cat.
You should start training your Scotty from the moment it is brought home at
around 8 weeks old. You should teach your Scotty some simple words to start
with, say the appropriate word several times while the puppy maintains that
position. It will rapidly learn to associate the word with what it is doing.
At the same time praise the pup to let it know you are pleased with what it
is doing. Your Scotty will quickly learn what praise words like 'good dog'
mean. If the puppy does anything you do not want it to do, say 'NO' but only
when you catch it actually misbehaving. Never discipline the puppy even minuets after it has done something wrong. It will not associate your discipline with a previous
action.
Set aside 5 minuets a day to start with then continue once a week to rehearse
and reaffirm the commands. Find out if there are any basic training classes in
your city, They can be fun and are a help especially if your Scotty was obtained
when at an older age. You can show off your Scotty and make
many new friends with a common interest.
