So you just brought home a new pup
While most of us might be
prepared for things to
come, you have no control over what has already happened before you
brought home the pup. If your pup has already been in contact with other
dogs, he may have picked up a virus, he may already have
worms.....
This page is to bring to your attention the possibilities, and to
warn you of the dangers that exist.
When you bring home a new pup
- Register with a vet, after the pup has settled down in a few days,
the vet should see your pup.
- Arrange with the vet an appointment for his
first vaccination.
- Keep your pup away from all animals (If you have other
animals, & know their vaccinated OK!)
- Don't take a pup out for a walk, a virus like
Parvo can be picked up from other
dogs mess.
- If you have visitors, think about who they are, do they have un
vaccinated animals.
- Keep your garden
clean, wash with disinfectant like Jays fluid.
- Make sure other animals cannot get into your garden, they might just
carry a virus.
Young pups might already have
flea's, worms and other complaints, deal
with them as soon as possible, but only when its safe to do so, don't use
any treatments that are not suitable for pups.
Find out what food
has already been fed, although it might not be the best, you should feed the
same for the first few weeks, and slowly introduce a better food, like
chicken and rice.
Don't buy any treatments for a young pup, you don't need to clean his
teeth, you don't need to use any
chemicals or off the shelf products, he is far too young for this.
Check every part of your pup, check his/her
ears, teeth, legs, tail, EVERYTHING
!
Its sad to hear, that people who are fetching home 8/10 week old pups,
believe they come with a shield, and are protected against everything. THEY
ARE NOT !
If your pup is under the weather for more than a day, stops eating, stops
drinking, sick, you just might save his life if you take him/her along to a
vet.
Be safe not sorry....
